Dracopedia Field Guide🐉Dragons of the world by William O'connor art reference fantasy dragon artist
Dracopedia Field Guide: Dragons of the World from Amphipteridae through Wyvernae book preview. This is my second Dracopedia book in the series, which a lot of you guys have been asking about so I decided to make a video for it. Hopefully I will get chance to purchase the ones I don't own yet and make a video flick through for those too. I find this one very inspiring as an artist, especially for the ideas and designs of the range of dragons throughout ( plus the information is pretty interesting if you're a fantasy nerd like me too ) but it is worth noting that this one isn't specifically a 'how to draw dragons' book like a few of the others in the series. If you want more of the step by step versions you can try: Dracopedia: A Guide to Drawing the Dragons of the World, or even Dracopedia - The Bestiary: An Artist’s Guide to Creating Mythical Creatures, if it's just not Dragons you want.
These books are great quality hard books that look really nice on the shelf too. I mentioned in the video I have a lot of other dragon art books which I will link below, but the Dracopedia illustrations by William O'connor are definitely more realistic when compared to the 'dragonart' series for example.
Unfortunately the artist William O'connor is no longer with us, but it's great to see his work is still helping many of us and inspiring us. Please be respectful in the comments.
Which books in the series are your favourite?

Big messy sketchbook tour video! 150 pages of drawing fundamentals using a ballpoint pen. I LOVE a good sketchbook tour video here on UA-cam, so I decided I would try and make another myself, although this one isn't a sketch book full of beautiful, nicely rendered finished illustrations - far from it. Yes dragons are incredible! I need to start drawing more of them - although I must admit I find dragon anatomy quite tricky when in motion. Oh man, new books on the way is ALWAYS excited for me, what are the titles, I might have a look. I haven't got any furries books at the moment, it's not something I have looked into but I am intrigued by it!

      Thanks for watching. Yeah there are 5 books in this series, quite a lot really. Especially considering there are so many other Frazetta art books out there now, it's a shame there is such an overlap in them as it's hard to know which to buy! XD

    Keep in mind if you keep drawing to impress others you’ll never be happy. Instead learn the ability to draw for yourself.. you’ll be happier and realize you will improve much more and develop a solid style! Everything else will come later..The self validation bs. And sketchbooks are meant for experimentation, ideas and learning. Don’t ever, restrain yourself. For the love of god, listen.. Ive done all of the above.. and learned from those decades.. Great Anatomy sketches! Don’t knock it, you learn from every line! Try to incorporate everything you learn into a drawing!

      Great advice, I couldn't agree more! Also Thank you for the kind words too. I guess the biggest issue I struggle with when it comes to 'drawing for myself and not others' is wanting to make a career from my art in the future, so the need for wanting to build a following on socials is there, to make it more of a viable option, if that makes sense? Not that you NEED to have the social following, but it could certainly help. I guess I need to find a balance though, as we all know that socials can be pretty distracting especially if you have a tendoncy to procrastinate (which unfortunately I do! haha). Thanks again for watching!

I have never heard from them again after I ordered there and on my 2 mails to their support I also have not received any replies. hi, Thanks for the review, i have been thinking on buying this pen display however im not sure about the screen brightness and the texture you mentioned. is the texture bad? is there a way to discribe it? and the brightness is it bright or dark on max brightness?

    • @SketchedbySte
      @SketchedbySte 3 дні тому

      The texture to the screen is just a subtle 'noise' texture to it, you wouldn't notice where there is colour, it's more just if you have a white canvas loaded up and really look at it you can see it, almost like a screen protector (that may be essentially what it is, but don't quote me) but no - you won't notice it unless you are looking for it and it won't bother you realistically. In terms of the brightness, it's worth noting I have mine set less than 50% of the max brightness setting, which for my eyes is too bright (for my set up, room lighting etc) so I have never put the brightness up even close to 100%. Again, to me that means it has a plenty large enough range of dark to light settings, so I wouldn't let that influence the decision either, but I understand everyone is different. Hope that helps, thanks for watching

    • @KingKiller12O_
      @KingKiller12O_ 3 дні тому

      @@SketchedbyStethanks for the reply Also another question, do i need a screen protector or is it alright the way it is? And some people complained about purple/pink light on the edge of the screen when they put a white screen, is it there or is it just a defect in their product?

    1:32 Dude, I was about to recomend you Patrick Brown's work at some point! It's so cool you know his work! Y'know since he started working for Marvel, they've used his work on various different stuff, or should I say products. It's such a pleasant surprise when, in a random store, you come across a Spider-Man backpack or pen holder, and you recognize it: 'Oh hey, that's Patrick's work!'. Did you know he also had an artbook, well its called 'The Art of Patrick Brown: Video Game Art & Character Design' and it was published by MadArtistPublishing in 2012. Anyways, love yer videos, keep it up! :)

    • @SketchedbySte

      Oh yeah I am a huge fan of Patrick Browns work, we talk a lot as I am quite active in his discord and used to be on the top tier for his patreon, so that I could recieve feedback on my work from him - What a dream! But unfortunately I think his high workload from marvel meant he had to stop that tier due to time constraints, I am still devastated to this day! But yeah Pat is one of my favourite artists ( and art teachers!!) I actually do have that magazine if it's the one I am thinking of ( cartoon version of Pat on the front? lots of GTA content thruoghout?) I bought it cheap on Amazon not long ago. Although you can see how much his art has improved since as it's been a while since that was printed. I always say to Pat & people in the group I would kill for a proper art book just filled to the top with all his content! Do you know any other artists with a similar style out of curiosity? Hey, thanks for your comment. It's definitely a big question to answer. But the Andrew loomis book 'fun with a pencil' might be a good start ( although it is quite old now admitedly). I also think something that is quite 'fun' and generalised for information might be good like the Brett Bean DRAW book (link here - ua-cam.com/video/JiYWXUjro-Y/v-deo.html ) that one will probably give you a basic understanding of most subjects in art, but without going too deep of focusing on one area in perticular. If you are hoping to be a character artist / designer, anatomy and gesture books might also be a good one for you, there's an awful lot out there to choose from. Again Andrew loomis 'figure drawing for all it's worth' is a good one and has all the info you really need, but I did find it a tough read personally. Morpho books might be an inexpensive way to start and see if you like the teaching style of the book - ua-cam.com/video/71A756gIH04/v-deo.html Also I found Tom Fox Draws book really good not only for anatomy but also for getting an understanding of shapes in space, probably the most important fundamental. here is a link, let me know what you think to them - ua-cam.com/video/qO0bJY6yKlI/v-deo.html

    Excellent sketchbook tour! Really impressive that you did everything in here with a ballpoint pen!? I didn't even know what was a thing. The hard work is really paying off . I know you said you have a long way to go but I think you already have a pretty good understanding of structure and fundamentals. A lot of people skip past the basic skills before mastering them, so like you said in the video, these initial sketches should pay off in the long run especially if you're trying to draw from imagination eventually. Also I like that you mentioned the Proko anatomy course, the notes look really useful, I have been thinking of taking the course myself. Would love to see a Proko anatomy course review in the future or any other drawing courses you would recommend. Have you tried the Proko fundamentals course too?

    • @SketchedbySte
      @SketchedbySte 21 день тому

      Thanks Natasha. Yeah i'm a bit surprised that I have started using a ballpoint pen so much myself too haha! I am more of a pencil / graphite sketch kinda guy usually when it comes to traditional art and filling sketchbooks, but I do like the contrast with ballpoint pen, plus it shows on camera much better too. I would love to do a Proko anatomy course review, that's a great idea, although I still have a long way to go through it at the moment ( currently on the last half of the course, legs anatomy ). I have the fundamentals course too yes, but I haven't really started it yet. The proko courses are probably the best I have come across - but they're very long and require an awful lot of commitment in my opinion! Thanks again for watching

    Hi i just watched the video all the way through and it was absolutely worth it, your figures are still really great and im sure you'll be able to do them from imagination soon, its really important to desromanticize the sketchbook as this place where your prettiest drawings are gonna be, they're pretty much our training wheels or study logs and they can and should look rubbish especially at the start, and while real pretty sketchbook are always gonna be more popular because people just like looking at pretty art, i think that being real and showing all the real practice that comes with becoming a good draftsman makes us all aspiring artists so much more aware of the steps it takes and reminds us to "trust the process" rather than expect perfection at every step, here's to more sketchbook tours of all skill levels!

    • @SketchedbySte
      @SketchedbySte 21 день тому

      Thanks so much for the wonderful comment. I couldn't agree more! I definitely have a real struggle to de-romanticize the sketchbook as you mentioned! I have to fight the urge to not render beautiful illustrations and spend days on them, because I usually find I didn't learn anything in the process . Again, exactly like you said, my hope is that these kind of studies of fundamentals ( despite not being overly exciting ) will help me get to a stage where I can draw better from imagination too, so hopefully it will pay off! Thanks again for watching

    I love watching sketchbook tour videos here on UA-cam too, and this was no exception! It's not very often I actually see a sketchbook tour showing fundamentals, as you mentioned, it's usually fully rendered illustrations that probably aren't really 'sketches' at all haha. I think this was really well done though, I can see you are putting in the mileage and it's pretty clear you have a pretty good understanding of perspective, anatomy and other fundamentals. Keep up the awesome work and I can't wait to see part 2. More sketchbook tour videos please!!

    Wow you should see my sketchbooks. They're doodle pads for the most part but I'd follow a particular theme until it seems right but I fill my pages so there might be some similar drawings on one page like yours but I fill the page with other stuff that's takes my fancy. As reference it's good because of the randomness I'll have so much variety that I can get fresh ideas just going through old stuff. Variety is relative as I'll draw fantasy/sci-fi warriors, wizards, ninjas, male and female, also partial to spaceship design. I couldn't draw the basics over and over again and quite frankly I'd rather have a destination to go towards like an entire figure instead of just doing a head or torso at a particular angle, you're never going to use that in a final picture. Still drawing every day is definitely beneficial in building technique and keeping you the zone.

    • @SketchedbySte
      @SketchedbySte 20 днів тому

      Thanks for watching! Yeah I really like the way you are doing your sketchbooks, and the content sounds awesome, I would love to see your stuff! I think I should probably work like that too to be honest. Although I guess ultimately the main thing is to make sure we are drawing and improving and not worrying too much about whether it will mess up the sketchbook or match the theme etc. Thanks again!

      Thanks so much! Haha yeah I used to prefer pencil / graphite, I'm not sure how I have started swaying towards ballpoint so much, because it's really not very forgiving! The Dragonart evolution book has a lot of art thats from this book ur showing here as How to steps. It makes me sad to hear that J. Peffer hasnt got more of an online presence. At the time when she was more active, she was working on Dragon Flight. An online game where u breed and raise dragons and other pets. If she was still making art and posting it, i would have loved to have seen her evolution of her art work and what more books she would have made to inspire kids to draw.

      I picked the Dragonart Evolution book up the other day. I prefer it to the original red cover / how to draw dragons book ( very similar but almost like a follow on to it with more details i think ) but yeah I did notice some of the dragons from this one are shown in the step by step section of Evolution. Dragon Flight, that's the one! Yeah, it makes me sad too, I wonder if she is still working on it? I am surprised she hasn't used social media just to post a few pics occasionally over the years. It's a real shame, I hope she's still drawing, I wonder if she has improved much over the years too. Maybe one day we will see more from her! Thanks for watching
